Creativity & InNovation: More than just “Art”

World Creativity and Innovation Day got me thinking: too often, we assume creativity belongs to artists, designers, or musicians. And innovation? We tend to associate it with start-ups or tech labs.

But in my life, I see it everywhere. Creativity is in the way a teacher finds a way to reach a student who’s struggling. Innovation is the parent who figures out a new routine to make work-from-home life actually work. It’s the engineer tinkering late at night to solve a problem no one else can crack, and the small business owner finding a clever way to connect with their community.

At Whitewall, we get to witness this every day — in the people we work with, the stories they want to tell, and the content and experiences they’re trying to create. But the bigger lesson is that creativity and innovation aren’t limited to a “creative department”. They’re human skills, and they can show up anywhere — when curiosity meets courage, when someone dares to try a new way of seeing the world.

As Chief Creative Officer, I rely every day on the ideas, ingenuity, and fresh thinking of my colleagues and our clients. The best work comes from collaboration — from combining different perspectives, challenging assumptions, and daring to try new approaches together.

And it isn’t always those of us with “creative” in our job title who own the ideas that really sing. Turning a guest speaker’s non-appearance into an impromptu ice-cream social is still my favorite example of an event logistics manager with the instinct and flair to turn 45-minutes of potential dead time into an engaging and fun networking experience that delegates still talk about.

So, I’m raising a thought to all the problem-solvers, makers, thinkers, and doers out there. You don’t have to call yourself a “creative” to make the world a little better, smarter, or brighter.

When was the last time you solved something in a way no one else expected?
